Northerners Warned About Possible SGEU Strike

A spokesman for the Saskatchewan Government and General Employees Union says northerners will definitely be impacted by a strike, should one take place.

The union has served 48-hour strike notice, and it’s possible as many as 13,000 government workers could walk off the job as early as tomorrow.

SGEU spokesman Barry Nowoselsky says the impasse between the provincial government and the SGEU could make the lives of northerners more difficult.

Nowoselsky notes northern airdrops, child protection and highway maintenance are all jobs performed by union members.

Nowoselsky says the issues prompting the threat of a strike run deep, and the union doesn’t plan to back down until they’re addressed.

He adds the union has 700 grievances before the government right now.

Nowoselsky says he can’t believe it’s come to this, but insists the union will stick up for its membership.
