Organizers of one of the North’s largest annual youth gatherings want to put an emphasis on outdoor survival skills in this year’s event.

The Lac La Ronge Indian Band will be hosting its 10th annual youth conference next month.

Spokesman Roger Ratt says the tragic freezing death of a Hall Lake teenager a year-and-a-half ago opened a lot of eyes to the need for wilderness survival training.

Ratt says, unlike previous conferences, there will be less workshops on issues like suicide and alcohol and drug abuse, and more programming dealing with education and careers.

However, he says organizers have invited some former inmates to talk about the importance of staying out of trouble with the law.

The conference will run from February 17th to 20th in La Ronge, and Ratt expects as many as 300 youth from across the North to attend.
