Northern Trapping Severly Affected By July Flood

A fur-block president in Cumberland House says this year’s flood will have a devastating impact on the trapping industry.

Clifford Carriere says the July flood ruined many trappers’ cabins and also resulted in the drowning and movement of several animals including moose, elk, and white-tailed deer.

He adds the food-chain has been seriously affected and it’s something that won’t be fixed overnight.

Carriere says the flood also couldn’t have happened at a worse time for the local water-fowl, which were just beginning to hatch.

He added the trappers have appealed to the government for help.

Carriere says he is working closely with both, the local first nation and the village, on the issue and hopes to hear something soon.
