Northern Saskatchewan teams were well-represented at the Saskatchewan Mining Association’s 40th annual Emergency Response/Mine Rescue Skills Competition in Saskatoon over the weekend.
The event features six competitions that simulate emergency situations these crews might have to tackle on the job.
Five teams from northern mine sites took part in the event – four of them made the winners’ podium.
AREVA’s McClean Lake team won in the surface category of the first aid competition and in the surface portion of the proficiency event.
Cameco teams cleaned up in the practical skills competition. The Key Lake crew was the surface winner, while the team from McArthur River was the winning squad in the underground category.
Another Cameco team, from Cigar Lake, was the underground winner in the proficiency competition.
SMA executive director Pam Schwann says the members of that team were very excited about their win, because it was the first team Cigar Lake has entered in that competition for several years.
Schwann also says it’s worth noting that the number of First Nations and Metis participants in the mine rescue competition is growing, and many of the teams are 50 per cent Aboriginal.
