A celebration reception will be held at the University of Saskatchewan this evening to mark the official creation of an association geared specifically at northern students.

The Northern Administration Students Association has been meeting informally for the last couple of years, but was only recently recognized as an official on-campus association.

President John Desjarlais, who’s from Cumberland House, says the group had to develop a constitution and prove a membership of at least 20 people.

Desjarlais says he and others perceived a need for a students’ group with a northern-specific focus.

He says NASA helps Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students on campus who need help making the adjustment from remote areas to an urban setting.

Desjarlais says the association has 30 members.

He also says privacy restrictions prevent him from finding out exactly how many northerners are taking classes on campus.

Senator Lillian Dyck is one of the special guests that will be in attendance at tonight’s reception.
