A number of forest firefighters from northern Saskatchewan are headed to B.C. to help with the fire situation in that province.

Saskatchewan Environment is sending 40 Type I firefighters, a few specialists and some equipment to help battle blazes near Chilliwack.

Department spokesperson Jeannette Krayetski says most of the personnel being sent to B.C. are from northern communities.

Krayetski says the relatively quite fire season in Saskatchewan is allowing the province to lend a helping hand.

She says the number of fires recorded so far this season in Saskatchewan is half of what was recorded this time last year and is roughly a third of the 10-year average.

There are currently only 2 fires burning in the province, and neither of them is considered a threat.
