A non-profit group in La Ronge is working on a plan to make local housing more affordable and stabilized for people with mental and physical disabilities in the North.

NorthSask Special Needs Housing, Employment, Recreation, Inc. Chair Melissa Cromarty says the group recently did a special needs assessment survey in the area and found that there are many obstacles affecting the quality of life for people with disabilities.

Cromarty says the issues found in the survey are forcing those with disabilities out of the North to access services in the South.

She added that the group is now looking at options such as emergency housing, a supportive apartment approach and a group home to resolve the issue.

Cromarty says if those gaps are filled, it will reduce the risk of people with disabilities becoming homeless.
