Northern Municipal Legislation Under Review

Northern citizens are getting a chance this week to offer their feedback on proposed changes to the Northern Municipalities Act.
A committee struck by the province and New North has been reviewing the legislation for a year now.
That process is now into the community consultation stage.
La Loche Mayor Georgina Jolibois says the proposed changes — if approved — will give northern municipalities greater freedom in setting budgets and implementing bylaws.
Jolibois also says there could be changes to election rules concerning candidates with criminal backgrounds.
Under the current proposal, she says candidates will have to disclose any criminal history on their nomination papers — and a winning candidate who is discovered to have lied about a criminal past will be automatically thrown out of office.
The provincial cabinet will get the final say on all proposed changes.
