An ethics committee has been formed for the Keewatin Yatthe Regional Health Authority, which serves the province’s northwest.

CEO Richard Petit says the purpose of the committee is to ensure that all decisions taken by staff and board members fit with community values.

Approximately a dozen board members, staff, and people from across the region are represented on the committee.

Petit says they’ve already identified some values and principles for ethical decisions.

“We have mutual respect. We treat everybody with respect, and that’s an expectation. The board believes that people are responsible for their own health,” Petit says.

The committee plans to undergo some training over the next month or so.

They want to get ideas from other health regions that have set up similar committees.
