Northern Forest in Need of Moisture

Provincial forest fire officials are concerned about below-average moisture levels in the northern forest.

Spokesman Alvin Reimer says the forest fringe is of particular concern, since it saw relatively little precipitation over the winter months.

Most of the rest of the northern forest received average precipitation this past winter, but Reimer says it wasn’t enough to make up for the lack of moisture that’s accumulated over the last few years.

Reimer says last year’s forest fire season saw an inordinately high number of days where the fire hazard was high or extreme — and he feels we will likely see a repeat this year if we don’t get lots of rain this spring.
