SaskTel has announced plans to expand cellular phone coverage into eight previously-unserved northern Saskatchewan communities.

SaskTel spokesperson Michelle Englot says digital cell service will soon be available in Pinehouse, Sandy Bay, Chitek Lake, Pelican Narrows, Stanley Mission, Denare Beach, the village of Deschambault Lake and the west portion of La Loche.

Englot says the extent of the cell service coverage in each community will depend on the surrounding terrain and tower signal strength.

Meanwhile, 31 other Saskatchewan communities that already have cell phone coverage will soon have access to digital cellular service — including Red Earth, Sturgeon Lake, Prince Albert, Saskatoon, North Battleford, Kawacatoose and Yorkton.

All of the projects are expected to be complete by the end of next year. They represent the final phase of SaskTel’s $28 million digital cellular network improvement program.
