A total of $1.6 million has been allocated to help 20 northern Saskatchewan communities with recreational facility construction and improvements.

Funding for the projects has been determined by the Northern Sport, Culture and Recreation District, which received the money from the provincial government.

The approved projects include $100,000 for a skateboard park in La Ronge, $120,000 for renovations to the Denareplex in Denare Beach, $100,000 for an outdoor pavilion in Stanley Mission and $100,000 to both the Buffalo River Dene Nation and the Village of Beauval for youth centres in those communities.

Spokesman Rus Duncombe says the NSCRD will continue to work with the applicants to bring the projects to completion.

The original funding came from the Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport.
