It could be at least six months before voters in northern Saskatchewan pick a new Member of Parliament.

Liberal MP Gary Merasty announced has he will leave his seat on August 31st.

Merasty resigned from politics last month after just 17 months in office.

Elections Canada spokesman John Enright says a byelection must be called between 11 and 180 days after the resignation date.

On top of that, a campaign lasts a minimum of 36 days.

None of the major federal parties have said if they will be running candidates in the byelection.
