No Major Environmental Damage From Fuel Spill

It doesn’t look as though a stretch of land that was impacted by a fuel spill near La Ronge last year will require any more major cleanup efforts.

In early December, a truck owned by Federated Co-op overturned on Hwy. 102 between Sucker River and Stanley Mission.

Approximately 2,900 litres of fuel spilled out near a culvert.

Hazardous waste coordinator Brad Sigurdson says tests were carried out in July that indicate the spill area is slowly returning to normal.

The last few tests have showed a decreased level of petroleum hydrocarbons in the area.

Even so, Sigurdson says, you can still see a slight sheen in some parts of the ditch.

He says booms designed to keep the oil from the lake will remain in place until further notice.
