Nilson Says Controversial Fire Policy Staying Put

Saskatchewan’s environment minister says he doesn’t think the province’s northern forest fire strategy will be undergoing any drastic changes.

John Nilson says the so-called “let it burn” policy is part of the province’s overall management plan — something he says was affirmed and supported at a recent meeting of environment ministers from across the country.

Nilson says some tweaking may go into the strategy after it is fully reviewed, but he believes the basic rules will stay the same.

The policy was widely blamed for the fires that threatened Stony Rapids and Black Lake this past summer.

Nilson adds the department’s ability to respond would be strengthened if Ottawa commits more equipment.
