New Trespassing Legislation Comes Into Force

The provincial government is cracking down on trespassers.
New legislation will allow police to slap fines of up to $2,000 on anyone who refuses to leave private or commercial property, or who ignores posted “No Trespassing” signs.
Up until now, police were forced to take people to court to prove a criminal charge.
The legislation had been opposed by the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations.
Vice-chief Delbert Wapass felt First Nations hadn’t been properly consulted over the act and it could affect the rights of all interest groups to protest.
However, according to a government news release, the Act won’t prevent activities such as peaceful picketing on public property and peaceful demonstrations at the legislature.
