New Status Cards Expected To Be Ready By Summer

Government officials say a long-awaited new and improved Indian status card should be ready by next summer.

The current status card has been under review for several years because of cases of misuse and fraud by non-Indians.

The new card features several security improvements.

Indian Affairs spokesperson Margot Geduld says it won’t be mandatory to have the new card by next summer.

Geduld also says the new cards won’t be automatically sent out — status Indians will have to apply for them.
