Saskatchewan’s minister of Northern Affairs says northerners have helped shape tough new guidelines for companies looking to set up uranium mines in this province.

Joan Beatty says new legislation on the way compels companies to follow guidelines on how the land is to be repaired once they’ve left.

Beatty says up until now, the government and industry hadn’t agreed on how that was to take place.

Under the terms of the legislation funding for long-term maintenance of the sites will be provided by companies, while the province accepts custodial responsibility.

A registry will also be created of decommissioned and reclaimed sites.

She believes the new legislation speaks for everyone.
