As of today, First Nations can apply for funding to build new homes on reserves or renovate existing ones.

Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl and Human Resources Minister Diane Finley made that announcement today.

A total of $250 million dollars will be available to First Nations across Canada over two years for the creation of new on-reserve housing and renovation of existing housing.

The idea is to provide housing and stimulate the economy by providing jobs for Aboriginal people.

Another $150 million will be available through Indian Affairs for several other initiatives, including high-density housing.

Homes can also be converted to private ownership.

To access that money, bands can apply to the nearest Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation regional office.

First Nations will receive applications in the mail from INAC soon.

They are being urged to fill out an expression of interest and return it to Indian Affairs.
