The new chief of the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation says his first priority is getting the community more involved.

Chief Cliff Tawpisin Jr. says that will be the biggest change from the previous band government.

He wants to see community members become more involved and aware of decisions made.

Tawpisin says the past few years have helped the council identify what is missing in terms of support services, as well as governance mechanisms and controls.

He also prefers not to call it a period of turmoil, but instead, a “learning experience”.

He says, for now, there will be no major changes in administration.

Tawpisin is a former urban councillor who was suspended by former chief Gilbert Ledoux and then reinstated.
