The federal government has announced $33 million in funding over the next three years for the National Association of Friendship Centres.

Canadian Heritage Minister Bev Oda says the money will enable Canada’s friendship centres to continue offering programs geared at urban Aboriginal young people.

Oda says the new money is in addition to the four-year, $77 million funding deal for the group announced last year.

Those funds were set aside to help the association operate its 116 friendship centres across the country.

NAFA president Vera Pawis Tabobodung says the new funding will allow more young people to take part in friendship centre programming for longer periods.

She calls today’s announcement “a real step forward”.
