New Cree Translation Of The Bible In The Works

An American linguist that’s helping to translate the Bible into a more modern version of Cree is putting the call out for more Cree speakers to offer their help.

Meg Billingsley has been stationed in Prince Albert the last 18 months, interviewing Saskatchewan Aboriginal people that are fluent in Cree.

Billingsley explains the project is the brainchild of the Canadian Bible Society, and has been in the works for the last 20 years.

Billingsley says there is a Cree translation of the Bible already in print, but it’s well over 150 years old and the society felt a new version was needed.

She says the first draft is almost done, and expects the translation in the Plains Cree dialect to be published in about five years.

Anyone wishing to lend their assistance to this project is encouraged to call Billingsley at 922-5420.
