New Alcohol Ban Planned For Stanley Mission

The RCMP have been asked by the Lac La Ronge Indian Band to enforce public disturbance bylaws in Stanley Mission until a new no-alcohol bylaw is in place.

The bylaw was recently struck down at the urging of lawyers because of problems with the way it was drafted.

In a statement issued by Stanley Mission’s band councillors, they admit the bylaw controlling the use and sale of intoxicants on the reserve “may not” have been properly passed in 1993.

The councillors go on to say that because of the recent decision by the legal establishment to scrap the bylaw, they are very concerned that life on the reserve will take a turn for the worse.

They also say that the Lac La Ronge Indian Band will work to have a new bylaw validly enacted in Stanley Mission in the near future.
