A lawyer for the mother of Neil Stonechild says a lawsuit has been filed against several Saskatoon police officers due to their unwillingness to accept responsibility for the teenager’s death.

A statement of claims asks for a total of $30 million in damages.

Don Worme says the move is unfortunate, but he points out that several months have passed since a report into Stonechild’s death was released, and not much has happened.

In the report Justice David Wright concluded two officers likely had Stonechild in their custody shortly before he was found frozen to death on the outskirts of the city.

Worme says Stonechild’s mother, Stella Bignell, is just trying to get on with her life, and the lawsuit is aimed at assisting the process.

Worme is not sure how long the litigation will take.
