NDP Releases Aboriginal Election Platform

The NDP’s Aboriginal platform, released this morning, includes a pledge to invest $5 billion over five years to improve health services and provide adequate housing, water and infrastructure in Aboriginal communities.

 

The NDP is also promising to:

 

-Ensure that residential school survivors left out by the current agreement are fairly compensated.

 

-Immediately ratify the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

 

-Implement Jordan’s Principle to guarantee First Nations children are not hurt by jurisdictional disputes between governments.

 

-Legally recognize the legitimacy and jurisdiction of indigenous governments.

 

-Develop a comprehensive land claims policy that respects Aboriginal title.

 

Today’s announcement was made at the Indian and Metis Friendship Centre in Winnipeg.
