NDP Hopeful Hurt In Single Vehicle Rollover

A man vying for the NDP nomination in the upcoming provincial by-election in northern Saskatchewan has been sidelined following a highway accident.

Doyle Vermette was injured when an SUV he was riding in rolled on its way back from a nomination meeting in Cumberland House on Monday.

NDP spokesman Don Black says Vermette suffered a fairly serious injury — a gash on his head required over 40 stitches to close — and he will be missing the next few nomination meetings this week.

According to Black, a cut on Vermette’s head required over 40 stitches, and he’s still shaken up about the incident.

Black says while he is on hiatus, his rivals — Steve Lane and Earl Cook — have taken it upon themselves to speak on Vermette’s behalf, and let constituents know he is still in the running.

Meanwhile, a woman who was in the SUV at the time says the rollover demonstrates the need for northern roads to be paved.

Doris Morin was one of three other passengers in the vehicle.

Morin says the driver lost control when they hit a soft shoulder on the gravel road, causing the vehicle to enter the ditch and roll several times before coming to a rest against the tree line.

She received a numbers of bumps and bruises, and is still battling stiffness throughout her body — but says she’s thankful she and the others are still alive.

Morin is urging the government to make upgrading northern roads their top priority.

She also says there should be cell service in the area so that accident victims can call for help.

According to Morin, they were about 10 kilometres out of cell range, but were able to get help when a vehicle passed by about five minutes after the crash.
