Native Post-Secondary Funding Addressed In Report

A member of the NDP government says the province can’t give up trying to convince Ottawa to provide more post-secondary education funding for First Nations students.
MLA Warren McCall handed in a report to government yesterday on how to make education more affordable and accessible in this province.
McCall says if the feds dropped a cap on post-secondary education funding for Native people, it would have a big impact in Saskatchewan.
He notes an all-party House of Commons committee recently recommended dropping that cap.
McCall admits the demise of the Kelowna Accord was a blow to Aboriginal post-secondary education — but that’s no reason to stop trying to get the federal Tories on side.
McCall’s report also recommends developing culturally-relevant non-financial supports for Aboriginal students in mainstream educational institutions.
As well, he is keen on establishing a relocation bursary for students in remote areas who have to move to larger centres to take their education.
