A former mayor of Deschambault Lake says he believes the issue of spanking isn’t what defines whether or not someone is a good parent.

It was last week the Supreme Court of Canada ruled parents have the right to physically discipline their kids if they feel it’s necessary and if they stay within reasonable limits.

Oscar Beatty says the issue of whether or not to spank is one that should be left up to the parents, but notes showing children respect is the first thing that needs to be done.

Beatty adds the youth of today are experiencing many problems in their lives and talking with them is the first step towards building positive relationships.
