National Dene Organization Slowly Taking Shape

Dene First Nations from across western Canada are being represented at their annual gathering in Fort Chipeywan, Alberta this week.
One issue expected to generate a lot of discussion is the long-awaited creation of a national body to represent Dene interests.
The Denesuline Grand Council was officially incorporated in 2000, but still doesn’t have elected leaders or permanent headquarters.
Fond du Lac chief Allan Adam was named the interim leader of the new organization a couple of summers ago.
Adam is adamant that the initiative is not losing steam, but admits people are asking questions.
Adam says it’s high time the Dene bands elected some leaders to put a face on the new organization.
Delegates at this week’s gathering will also be discussing a proposed Denesuline Land Management Act that the Dene hope will guide resource negotiations with industry and government.
