A trial is resuming today for a Big River man accused of shooting his rifle near some boaters.
Victor Nanatakapo was charged in the spring of 2008, after some fishers on Deleronde Lake complained he shot into the water near them.
Nanatakapo, 55, is charged with careless use of a firearm.
He has publicly acknowledged the incident, but says he was merely trying to protect an ancient burial ground that was being repeatedly disturbed by ATV tracks.
He also said someone cut his fishing net, affecting his way of life.
Nanatakapo’s trial began in May, but had to be adjourned due to problems with his interpreter.
