Students at an inner city school in North Battleford had something extra to take home yesterday.
They received free backpacks from SaskPower’s Aboriginal Employee Network.
A total of about 200 students received the backpacks, crammed with school supplies.
McKitrick Community School is the only school in the province to receive the full program this year.
Students in Sandy Bay, a school that receives federal money, will also receive donations under the program tomorrow.
McKitrick Community School principal Terry Kjargaard is grateful for the donations.
He says a lot of kids start the year with few or no school supplies, and supplies are an important part of succeeding at school.
This is the first year of the program.
Donations of money and supplies were received from SaskPower employees in 14 locations across the province.
