A pickup truck struck two children on the Muskowekwan First Nation last night, killing one of them.

The RCMP say a 12-year-old girl and her 8-year-old brother were hit while walking along the band office road on the reserve at around 10:00.

The girl was taken to a nearby hospital, but succumbed to her injuries.

The extent of the boy’s injuries is not clear — but they were serious enough to have him transported to a hospital in Regina.

The Mounties say the 44-year-old driver of the truck stopped to assist the victims after the crash, and summoned other motorists to help.

The Muskowekwan resident has been charged with driving while disqualified, but RCMP spokesman Sgt. Brad Kaeding is indicating the public shouldn’t read too much into that.

Kaeding says even though the driver was charged, it’s too early to say who exactly was at fault.

The suspect has been released from custody and will make a court appearance on August 21st.
