An educator from the Muskoday First Nation is set to receive a Circle of Honour award from the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations.

Elwin Bear, an education coordinator on the reserve, will be recognized for his efforts in education and the community.

Bear says he enjoys helping out students at the school on the reserve, and knows what it’s like to overcome bad experiences.

He says, as a boy, he came across teachers “who weren’t very nice” and who didn’t appear to want him to succeed.

Bear says he decided that he wasn’t going to “let them do that to me” and resolved that he was going to succeed.

The 44-year-old says he’s not sure he deserves the award, but is honoured by the gesture.

He also thanks his family for their support over the years.

The Circle of Honour awards are presented to individuals who have demonstrated tremendous achievements, discipline and vision in their communities.

A ceremony was originally scheduled to be held this week in Saskatoon, but the event has been postponed until the fall.
