A Saskatchewan First Nation has signed a Treaty Land Entitlement settlement agreement with the provincial and federal governments.

Under the deal, the Muskoday First Nation receives $10.2 million for not receiving the amount of land to which it was entitled under the treaties.

The band also gets $542,828 for negotiation, ratification and acquisition costs.

As well, Muskoday is entitled to buy up to 15,384 hectares of land on a willing seller/willing buyer basis anywhere in Saskatchewan.

Today’s signing comes after three years of negotiations and a successful ratification vote.

Last May, 62% of members of the Muskoday First Nation voted in favour of the settlement.

Chief Austin Bear calls it a “historic time” for his band, and adds this deal will open up further economic development opportunities for his people.
