The chief of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band is confirming the young woman who recently abandoned her newborn baby in a bathroom stall at the Prince Albert Wal-Mart store is a band member.
Tammy Cook-Searson says she has not had any contact with the infant’s mother.
Cook-Searson says the band “will consider what is in the best interests of the child” as more information becomes available.
She also says her administration will “work to determine what mental health needs this young mother may have, and how best to support her”.
The unidentified mother, accompanied by family members, turned herself in to the La Ronge RCMP on Friday.
She has been receiving medical attention.
At last word, the baby boy was listed in stable condition in a Saskatoon hospital.
No charges have been laid, but police in Prince Albert say their investigation continues.
