Athabasca Basin Security has won a major contract from potash giant Mosaic.

The company started servicing Mosaic’s K1 and K2 operations near Estevan in December 2007.

Since that time, it has doubled its staff and was recently granted an extension of the contract through 2011.

Athabasca manager Ron Hyggen says it’s an exciting time for his group.

He says, in addition to the Estevan contract, his company also provides security for uranium mines in northern Saskatchewan.

Hyggen says his company provide medical services for those mines, as well.

He estimates roughly 90 per cent of the company’s workforce is Aboriginal.

Hyggen concedes only one of his employees at the potash operations is of Aboriginal ancestry — but says he plans to contact nearby First Nations in the weeks ahead to try to get that number up.
