More RCMP Officers For The North

Saskatchewan’s justice minister says much of the money directed toward his department in this year’s budget will be used to implement recommendations from two high-profile reports.

Frank Quennell says final reports from the Neil Stonechild inquiry and the Commission on First Nations and Metis People and Justice Reform are being addressed through the 2005 budget.

He says a $2.5 million cash injection for more police officers is just one key step.

The province has committed to funding 18 new police positions, including 11 new RCMP positions in northern communities.

The government says many of those jobs will be filled by Aboriginal officers.

Quennell also says more money is going towards the coroners’ office — a key recommendation in the Stonechild inquiry report.
