Montreal Lake Murder Suspect In Court

A 17-year-old boy charged with killing three people on the Montreal Lake Cree Nation has made his first court appearance.

The youth, who can’t be identified, stayed silent throughout this morning’s proceedings while a public defender spoke on his behalf.

Lawyer Peter Burns asked that the matter be set over to next week as the accused would very likely be assigned a different lawyer in the days to come.

The judge consented and ordered a new hearing for next Tuesday.

One unique note to come out of this morning’s hearing is that the 17-year-old will be sent to an adult remand centre until his next appearance, and not a youth facility.

That request apparently came from the Crown.

The father of the accused was present for today’s matter. However, he did not wish to speak to the media.

The youth faces three counts of first degree murder.

It was almost two weeks ago that police discovered the bodies of 19-year-old Farro Bird, 27-year-old Greg Naytowhow and 19-year-old Kerry Naytowhow at three separate locations on the Montreal Lake reserve.
