Montreal Lake Band Members Elect Another Bird

Lionel Bird is the new chief of the Montreal Lake Cree Nation.

 

Over 1,000 band members cast ballots in yesterday’s election.

 

In the end, Bird received 130 votes more than second-place finisher Shirley Henderson.

 

Roy Ross finished third.

 

Bird takes over from former chief Richie Bird, who decided not to run this time around.

 

Meanwhile, the Montreal Lake band council features a mix of familiar names and new faces.

 

In Montreal Lake, the councillors are Jason Ballantyne, Donald K. Bird, Harry Halkett, Arnold Naytowhow, Henry Naytowhow, Simpson Naytowhow and Frank Roberts.

 

Elmer Ballantyne, Jeffrey Badger and Fred Halkett are the councillors in Little Red.

 

Warren Beatty will represent Timber Bay on the Montreal Lake council, while Wallace Charles will represent urban members living in Prince Albert.
