The Montreal Lake Cree Nation will host the inaugural Northern Saskatchewan Cultural Gathering this fall.

Montreal Lake was one of a number of communities that bid to host the event.

It is being held to replace the Northern Saskatchewan Games and Cultural Festival that was supposed to take place in Cumberland House this summer, but had to be called off. In fact, the games and cultural festival were initially scheduled to be held last summer in Cumberland House, but the flooding there forced the postponement.

Northern Recreation Coordinating Committee spokesman Derek Sylvestre says its replacement will feature a number of traditional and cultural activities.

He says the gathering is designed to bring northerners together in one place to celebrate their culture and learn about traditional lifestyles through cooking, song and dance.

There will also be various competitions consisting of traditional games.

The gathering is slated to kick off in early October.
