A former councillor is now chief of the Saulteaux First Nation.

Kenny Moccasin won the job during a band election yesterday.

He replaces former chief Sarah Gopher, who decided not to run for re-election.

Moccasin got 275 votes, 160 more than his closest rival, Rodney Gopher. Fellow challenger Jerry Gopher received 42 votes.

There are four new faces on the five-person council.

The new councillors are Gary Gopher, Janice Poitras, Dain Moccasin and Tony Night.

Oscar Gopher was the only incumbent councillor to get re-elected.

Both the chief and council will serve a two-year term.
