SIAST has unveiled the province’s first mobile training lab.
It features a series of trailer units with pop-out sides, which will accommodate on-site training in the fields of welding, industrial mechanics and electrical engineering.
Northlands College CEO Bill McLaughlin says it is exactly what northern Saskatchewan needs.
The first set of classes are slated to begin in October at Cigar Lake.
Each training session will last between 7 and 20 weeks.
Northern Affairs Minister Joan Beatty says the new lab will be a good fit in a region where there is a great need for jobs and skills training.
Other leaders say they hope the lab helps end the trend of southern contractors doing work for northern communities and then leaving.
