The president of the Metis National Council says he supports the re-launch of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Clem Chartier says he hopes, however, that Metis are soon added to the list of former students eligible for compensation from the federal government.
He adds neither Ottawa or any of the churches has stood up to take responsibility for the harm and pain inflicted on thousands of Metis students.
Chartier says he supports the commission, but he won’t rest until his people are treated fairly.
He also notes the one Metis representative picked to be on the commission’s advisory panel wasn’t actually endorsed by the Metis people.
Chartier says the truth and reconciliation commission represents an opportunity for healing.
However, he stresses that unless the exclusion of Metis survivors is dealt with openly and honestly, it will be difficult for healing to happen.
