A nominee for the position of provincial secretary in the upcoming Metis Nation of Saskatchewan election says he will bring a more proactive approach to problems facing Metis people if his campaign is successful.

Ralph Kennedy is calling on the NDP government to pay more attention to issues affecting Metis people — in particular, northerners.

Yesterday, Kennedy attacked Environment minister David Forbes over a new policy of not fighting wildfires until they come within certain distances of communities or commercial wood supplies.

Kennedy says the policy will put many northern villages at risk and damage the seasonal fire suppression economy.

His plea was echoed by fellow election hopefuls Dwayne Roth and Ray Laliberte.

Kennedy is opposed in the upcoming vote by May Henderson, Rodney Laliberte, Tammy Mah and Leonard McCallum.
