The president of the Metis Nation of Saskatchewan is applauding the efforts made by the federal government to acknowledge the Metis people of Canada.

MNS President Dwayne Roth was in Ottawa yesterday for the policy retreat the Liberal cabinet organized with the nation’s major Aboriginal organizations.

Roth says the federal government has made giant steps in the advancement of Aboriginal Canadians, particularly the Metis.

Roth says this is an historic time for Metis people because Prime Minister Paul Martin and national Metis leader Clem Chartier will soon begin negotiating self-government, a land base and harvesting rights for Metis Canadians.
