MNS Prepared To Block Northern Roads Next Week

The Metis Nation of Saskatchewan is threatening to set up roadblocks in the province’s North next week if it doesn’t get a meeting with the premier soon.

The MNS has been embroiled in a dispute with the province over last year’s Metis election.

The government has pulled the organization’s funding and is also refusing to recognize the MNS executive.

The Metis group recently tried to get Cameco to exert its influence on the province, but company officials say they’re staying out of this.

As a result, MNS treasure Ray Laliberte says a couple of blockades will go up this coming Monday at key junctions on Highway 165 as a way of getting the attention of both government and industry.

Laliberte says companies like Cameco are extracting resources from the Metis land claim area without proper consultation.

Next week’s roadblocks will affect commercial vehicles, but local traffic and emergency vehicles will be allowed to pass.
