MNC Election Could Take Place Next Month

The Metis National Council has announced tentative dates for a general assembly and election for president.

The gathering will take on February 23rd and 24th in Ottawa.

The dates were agreed on last week by the MNC executive council at a settlement conference in Toronto.

It was at that meeting that former president Clem Chartier and the five provincial Metis leaders came to terms on how delegates will be selected.

The subject had been a matter of contention for months, and had prompted the federal government to temporarily halt funding to the MNC.

The deal that was reached is still being checked over by lawyers for the parties involved.

As long as they sign off on it, the assembly should go ahead as planned.
