Metis leaders will hold talks in northwest Saskatchewan this week regarding the duty to consult issue.

On Friday, executive members of Metis Nation – Saskatchewan will update grassroots members at meetings in Green Lake and Beauval on Friday.

Northern MN-S area director Louis Gardiner says Metis need to get up to speed on the issue so they can protect their traditional way of life.

He says up until now, the focus has mainly been on the government’s duty to consult First Nations about development on their traditional lands — not Metis.

Gardiner adds the meetings were prompted by the provincial government’s decision to hold roundtable meetings with Aboriginal groups in May.

He says a number of Metis leaders still have a lot of questions about the issue, and will need to be educated before then.
