The Meadow Lake Tribal Council is getting $1.67 million in federal and provincial funding for an initiative related to oil and gas.

Northern Affairs spokesman Scott Boyes says residents living in the northwest will soon be better equipped to find employment and business opportunities in the booming oil and gas industry.

Boyes explains the money will fund three projects — with the bulk of it going to the establishment of an oil and gas secretariat, which will pursue business opportunities in the industry for MLTC members.

Boyes says the other two programs will provide job training for northerners seeking employment in oil drilling or heavy equipment operation.

Those two programs have also received government funding through the Northern Development Agreement.
