It is too early to say how long today’s layoffs at the Meadow lake sawmill might last, according to NorSask Forest Products President and General Manager Allan Brander.

A total of 62 NorSask workers received layoff notices today. They take effective December 19th.

Brander notes the mill usually institutes a layoff of three or four weeks at Christmas time.

He says the company will examine the market during that time to decide when the mill might re-open.

The notices employees received said economic conditions don’t allow NorSask to continue right now.

They also said lumber prices will eventually recover, and when that happens, the mill will start up again.

The company scaled its operations down to one shift about a year ago.

NorSask is owned by the Meadow Lake Tribal Council.
